Safety Issues of Sneaker-Skates

Safety Issues of Sneaker-Skates

The first time I saw a young child gliding and darting around in a store I couldn't believe it. It took me a minute to realize what was going on. Then I noticed that the shoes had wheels in the heels. I've gotten more used to this since, but I still worry because I can't tell which way they're going next. And boy are they Fast!

Do kids who are using these shoes wear helmets? Usually not. They don't go terribly Fast. Still, there's a major safety issue with "heeling system," as the activity is called. The term "heeling system" is based on the brand name of the most popular type of these shoes. Plenty of kids who go heeling system end up in the emergency room.

There are a number of dangers that can send a child to the ER. Think about it. Kids are on wheels, but don't have helmets. That rightthere is a recipe for head injury.

Speed is a problem of course. But so is navigation. Kids who are heeling system around a mall or other venue will undoubtedly eventually encounter an obstacle. Not all obstacles "get out of the way, and navigation is really not that easy while heeling system.

These shoes, which seem so innocent, often lead to broken bones and "dislocated joints. It's human nature to stretch out your arm to try to stop your fall when you begin falling. Not surprisingly the Wrist and lower arm are often injured by kids who are heeling system. They also can wind up with elbow dislocations and skull fractures, both serious injuries.

Think about this a bit before buying a pAir of these shoes. Give me the benefit of the doubt for a minute on my next claim. Stop and Watch kids, especially young kids, while they are wearing these shoes somewhere where there is a crowd.

Do the kids pay attention to other people and take care to avoid them? Nope. And it's not the result of bad parenting, it's just that these are kids.

The kids dart in and out around people in the crowd. Some people, especially older people, may have trouble moving out of the way. That can pose a hazard to the child and to the person who is now an obstacle to be run into.

Sure, these shoes can be a lot of fun. Not all kids who use them end up hurt. Still, do a bit of research and know the risks before you decide whether to purchase a pAir.
